The brackets are what determines the appearance of the braces. The first fixed appliances were made exclusively from metal. With time, metal brackets have become smaller, better polished, smoother, and shinier over time, while retaining all the features needed for effective tooth movement. Technological progress has made it possible to manufacture different aesthetic brackets made of plastic, ceramics, or sapphire to make the braces as beautiful and as invisible as possible. Along with clear brackets, some braces today use tooth-coloured wires, making the braces seem invisible. While in the past, metal braces were integral part of adolescence, aesthetic brackets have made orthodontic treatment not only widely accepted among children but also among adults, becoming a symbol of self-improvement.
